Witchcraft

Day: 505

Photo taken on Monday, December 19, 2011 in the living room with Peggy's Christmas present for me at 724pm.

"Bye bye baby. Time to hit the road to Dreamland."-Shirley Jones

***********************************************************************
It had been hidden away, out of eyesight to the everyday onlooker but I can feel its pull; I know it resides somewhere in here, I just can’t pinpoint the exact location. I tear through my grandmother’s house (that I’ve been squatting in for the past decade) in search of the object, a magical extension of myself I hadn’t thought of in years.

Oh, who am I kidding, I think of it all every day. My wasted time and talent, all those years I studied and sought employment in the wizarding world only to end up in a common muggle job. I had it all: awards, recognition, the smarts to rival that know-it-all Granger but the only thing I lacked was motivation. I am nothing more than a pathetic nobody now, couldn’t hack it as a witch and certainly can’t hack it as a lowly researcher in my current timeline. Embarrassed as to my ultimate failure in making something of myself, I cut off ties to all classmates and teachers then parted ways with my family once war broke out in England. Though their Dark Lord fell, one had arisen in the states as Death Eaters fled their country to seek refuge here. I cowardly hid from them all, not having the gall to Obliviate my own family for their protection but instead spent the last several years failing at life. I thought I had done an adequate job of hiding myself amongst the muggle community but apparently finding a fellow classmate on my doorstep a moment ago proved otherwise.

“It is time. We’ve all been called.”

And with that, she vanished, leaving me to figure out just exactly where I’ve been called to when on the horizon I heard it, the telltale signs of a wizard battle. No time to let my stomach bottom out I sprang into action. Leaving my grandmother’s house wide open to attack, I made my way around the first floor debating whether I shrunk my wand to fit inside a pen or disguised it as a sword.

Now with my uncle’s old room thoroughly ransacked I find the pen and immediately start to disassemble it to retrieve my wand though I can’t seem to remember the spell to bring it back to its original size. I spy an odd looking sword as well and grab it out of the leather sheath. Inside I find a wand-not mine but my brother’s-and pocket it as I bound out of the house. I rattle off mumbled spells in hopes to find the one that helps my poor shrunken wand as I head toward the park where other magical folk seem to be gathering before they charge into battle. I hear a loud POP and I turn to find my estranged brother standing on the crest of the hill nearest me. He looks a bit dazed having partaken in side-along apparition with some Irish bloke that scurries off the moment he touches down.

Christopher and I lock eyes and I lob his wand at him. He catches it effortlessly but then blanches at it as if he doesn’t remember what exactly this piece of Birchwood and unicorn hair symbolizes. I haven’t seen him since he left home for Platform 9 ¾ in 1994. He barely returned for holidays while away in Europe and when he did, I made sure to stay at my American wizarding academy. Sure, Salem Witches Institute may not be as widely known as Hogwarts, but I think I deserved a place in the most famous school rather than where I landed. Being resentful didn’t suit my personality; therefore I made it a point to lose contact with the lucky chit. Later on I learned through the grapevine that he met a nice girl in University and decided to stay on in England. It made avoiding him much easier.

Until now.

He looks at me like he’s seen a ghost and technically, I am. A ghost of a childhood’s past.

“Well go on, give it a whirl. We haven’t got all day,” I say impatiently. I’m not sure how I came to have his wand in my possession anyway but at some point I must have hidden it for a specific reason. Maybe being a coward is genetic since I know for a fact he did not aide Hogwarts in the final battle against Voldemort. We must be in terrible trouble if they’re scraping the bottom of the cauldron in order to find us two dunderheads to fight in this war.

“When do I get a gun?” Christopher asks. I can’t help it but my jaw drops at this.

“We don’t use guns! We use wands!” He stares at me and I continue, “don’t you remember any of your spells from your days at Hogwarts?” I notice the tang of bitterness upon saying his alma mater’s name. “Alohomora? Confundo? Obscuro? Any of these ring a bell?”

He scrunches his brow at this. “I went there for a year and that was it,” he says disgusted. I had no idea my brother ignored his calling as a wizard but before I can even get angry at this notion, I realize we’re short on time as a red spell gone astray whizzes by my head.

“Just use Sectumsempra,” I say in a rush, waving my left arm in the wand motion for it and then turning my attention back towards the approaching doom heading our way.

“What does it do?” he asks curiously, turning over his wand in his hands, completely unsure as to how he got himself into this mess.

“It cuts people like crazy, now go!” I say as I head down the hill to the street yet he still stands there, not making any move to join the fight. “Just keep casting it!” I yell back at him as I crash into the oncoming chaos. I am so preoccupied with the swarm of angry witches and wizards that in my haste I forget to reteach him Protego, a simple shield charm. I just hope he stays on the offense.

With a simple swish and flick, I send a silent Wingardium Leviosa in the direction of a massive magical tank. It lifts off the ground and I fully intend to fling it into oblivion but it wobbles a few feet in the air then crashes back into the street as my spell releases. It’s exhausting to hold fast to that amount of magic and I watch in fear as the tank continues down the avenue, wreaking havoc as muggles scatter for shelter like cockroaches.

This can’t be happening. We can’t possibly win like this. As I try to cast the spell again, a dark figure across the way catches my eye. He knows.

We all know.

If I’m here, if I’m the last resort…chances are things have already gone horribly wrong.

Seeker

Day: 393

Photo taken on Monday, August 29, 2011 sitting in the Commander's Chair at 131pm.

The aftermath of Irene has kept me home from the Surge today and with no cable or internet, it's been pretty boring. There is only so many SPARCS I can do before tearing my hair out sounds like a better time. I've already cleaned my desk--twice--and luckily I find this little fella hiding behind my printer.

This particular Golden Snitch is a 20 Questions model and so far I have only beaten it once with the Confundus Charm in 2008. Today I have given it another go and so far it has gotten me three times. I have no idea how it figures out the portrait of Mrs. Black. Siriously?! That's really specific. I even use the Half-Blood Prince's potions textbook and when it starts asking me asinine questions around the 16th mark I think I have it beat...until it guesses the answer after asking, "is it an animal?" after I had already established the object I am thinking of is a BOOK. But alas, I figure out a way to beat it. If a spell worked like a charm last time (I couldn't help myself there), then surely it will work this time. I choose Sectumsempra and it cockily guesses, "you're the Killing Curse." Ha! No! Then it goes for the other obvious answer, "you're an Unforgivable Curse." Gotcha again!

It finally concedes to defeat.

IN YOUR FACE 20 QUESTIONS SNITCH!

Something Wicked This Way Comes

Day: 390

Photo taken on Friday, August 26, 2011 at my desk at 822am.

I'm going to give Professor Trelawney a run for her money here...

I think I see The Grim at the bottom of my green tea.

Hmmm...wonder why? What could possibly be happening this weekend?

Day: 382

Photo taken on Thursday, August 18, 2011 at The Surge at 349pm.

This is what I would look like if I were to magically become an anime character: My eyebrow piercing would come back, I'd somehow obtain the same scar as Kakashi, tribal paint would become my thing, I would pretend I was in Gryffindor, be related to the Silver Surfer, and have a potty mouth.

The End of an Era

Day: Three Hundred and Fifty

Photo taken on Sunday, July 17, 2011 after watching the final installment of Harry Potter in the Farmingdale Multiplex at 1030pm. (Pictured from left: The bad guys: Steve throwing a curse, Jenn pointing, and Heather channeling her inner Bellatrix. Neutral wizard: Mike. The good guys: Jon as Neville, Justin deflecting Steve's curse, and a hyperactive Hufflepuff.)

Ten years.

Pottermania has been in my life for an entire decade. And I have loved every single second of it.

I am aware of the Harry Potter books but thinking they are for children, never pick one up until I learn that it is story that anyone can enjoy. One day after hockey practice, my coach offers a movie excursion to Flatirons for Friday, the day Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone is scheduled to come out. The majority of the team wants to go as well as my roommate, Sam, who upon hearing I am going, begs to come along. She even runs into her room and retrieves the three books out so far, telling me she's a huge fan. So on Friday, she joins me and the rest of the CU Women's Ice Hockey Team to see this flick. I have no idea what to expect but I am open-minded since I know most of the Hogwarts staff from other movies and enjoy these actors. My reaction? I think I forget to breathe through the entire thing, completely enchanted with the magical world J.K. Rowling has created. I love the story, the characters, the school, the food, the EVERYTHING! I want to stand in front of the Mirror of Erised. I want to sit under the sorting hat. I want to join in the fight against Voldermort.

And so begins the ten years of obsessing over one of the greatest stories of all time. As the years go on, I learn of more friends that share my deep love for Potter: Maeve is a fellow student but not in my house (she's a Gryffindor) though we hit Hogsmeade all the time together; Naughty, EJ, Dormmate Chris, and I play drunken Harry Potter on the original Playstation ("Potter NO! Potter MOVE!"); Naughty breaks out her books on tape while we live in the hockey house; Cameron even comes down from MA to see Goblet of Fire with me; Annie and I get together after the sixth book comes out to discuss what we thought (I bring two pages of notes), Christine brings me to the Wizarding World, and the list goes on. It's the second time this year I am writing about a trip to Potterland but I am afraid this time it will be my last.

I struggle with the ending of Book 7, maybe because it is time to say goodbye to the favorite characters that stole my heart (and then DIED, leaving me all alone to wallow in my sadness over them, and what the hell? Out of my top five-technically six because the twins are a package deal-four die?! So not fair.) Book 7 means it is finally complete, that there is no more yet I still have the movie to look forward to. And when I hear they are dividing it into two I think, that's not necessary but I'll take it! Why not extend this for a few more years?

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part II is bittersweet. My heart gets ripped out during the Snape montage because he is such a complex character and tortured soul. How much he endures for the sake of saving Harry, the dark front he has to keep up in order to appear faithful to Voldermort, the way he stands there and accepts his fate he knew was coming all along, and how he buries his love for a woman he could never have. He keeps hatred in his heart for Harry because he wants to make him his father but when he demands Harry look at him, he sees the green eyes of Lily as he passes on. So moving, so heart wrenching. How could one not love Severus?

I had been looking forward to the scene in the room of requirement-the fire dragon-I had a feeling it would be freaking cool! Though I am very saddened by the fact that two of my favorites, Fred and Lupin, are not paid the noble death sequence they so rightfully deserve. I have trouble swallowing the fact that out of all the Weasleys, Rowling chooses to split the twins. If I have learned anything from this troublesome duo is that one would never leave the other, even in death. In my world, Fred returns and can rival Peeves anyday!

I admit, I cry when Dobby leaves us. The red hot anger I feel when Sirius dies at the hand of his cousin keeps me awake at night. The tears that are almost endless when everyone lights their wands and raises them in the air for Dumbledore breaks me. But I am not prepared for the emotion I feel bubbling to the surface when the snitch "opens at the close". This is why I love the series so much. This is why Harry is redeemed from Book 5's constant whining (thank you film adaptation for changing that in the fifth movie) and holds a very special place in my heart. He is brave and honorable and chooses to sacrifice himself for the greater good. It's a poignant scene that makes me want to be a better person, makes me want to be more like Harry: a defender, determined and fearless.

I have taken much from this series and I can spend hours of your time talking about it. There are many religious and spiritual themes laced within this story as well has humanity guidelines. I am happy to say I agree with what Rowling is trying to teach us: that love really does conquer all, that loyalty and standing up for what you believe in is important, and that friendship is a treasured gift that can last a lifetime.

These past ten years have been a glorious and wonderful adventure for me. I hope that my love for Harry Potter continues and I thank you all for putting up with my incessant chatter about the series.

"I want you to listen to me very carefully, Harry. You're not a bad person. You're a very good person, who bad things have happened to. Besides, the world isn't split into good people and Death Eaters. We've all got both light and dark inside us. What matters is the part we choose to act on. That's who we really are."-Sirius Black

I Have A Sirius Obsession

Day: Three Hundred and Twenty Nine

Photo taken on Sunday, June 26, 2011 in my bedroom, having a Spanglish-almost-noon-moment with my dog, Sirius.

Yes, there is a dog in this picture. A pug actually. And he likes to visit every now and then and have a Beer Water (so he doesn't lose his girlish figure). He is awesome, charming, and funny. When Sirius used to come to the Surge with me he would don a bow tie since a regular tie would get tangled in his short legs.

I can see you don't believe me about Sirius. Shame really. I swear you would love him.

Let me tell you the story of how Sirius becomes a part of our family in 2004:

I come home from college a different person; for some reason Colorado has mellowed me out, filled me with patience and a creativity I haven't tapped in a long time. My imagination runs wild, sometimes the results are cringe humored other times very silly. I'm in love with the person I have become but it weirds a lot of people out when I try to reconnect with them because I rarely ever curse and I can now admit when I'm wrong. I am also working full time at the Surge and have no mode for transportation unless a parental unit doesn't need their car so I have a lot of time by myself. So I ask for a dog.

That question is met with a resounding, "NO."

I take matters into my own hands and create my very own imaginary dog. I don't tell my parents about this until one night when the three of us are on the couch watching a television program and I suddenly swat the air above the cushion next to me, startling my parents. In my best authoritative voice I say, "Down! Off the couch! You know the rules!" I then point to the floor and then point to the doorway leading out of the den. I tilt my head and give the spot on the floor "the eye" and repeat the pointing. My eyes then trail the pathway out of the room. I sit back on the couch, satisfied to have won the argument.

It is then my parents learn of Sirius.

And they all accept him. Kim thinks it's funny whenever I reprimand him. My coworkers at the Surge find him wandering into their offices at random times of the workday and never seem to mind. Sirius becomes a part of our daily routine and Maeve gets to witness this one night when Kim goes to head upstairs for sleepytime and I demand she says goodnight to my open laptop, Nico.

She refuses.

"Kim, either say goodnight to Nico or you can say goodnight to Sirius." I point to the floor by Maeve.

Kim looks down at the tiled floor. "Goodnight, Sirius."

Maeve bursts out laughing. "Wait, you would rather say goodnight to something imaginary over something you can actually see?" The three of us dissolve into laughter and Sirius barks.

Though there is one evening when dad has had enough of Sirius, who is currently perched in bewteen us in his car on top of the console. I don't know if it's Sirius' snorted breathing or me talking for the dog or the imaginary dog hair all over his nice suit pants but dad has reached his breaking point. At a red light he rolls down the window and grabs for the console, hands in a cupping motion around Sirius, and turns to throw him outside.

"NOOOOOOO!" I scream, lunging across the car to wrench Sirius from his hands. My eyes well up with tears and dad laughs.

I think it is at this point I realize I have become too attached to my make believe pet and I should really invest my time in finding a boyfriend instead.

Too bad he turns out to be imaginary too.

Harry PottAH!

Day: Three Hundred and Six

Photo taken on Friday, June 3, 2011 in one of our storage spaces at 1142pm.

Every house should come equipped with a "cupboard under the stairs".

*Props to Steve for drawing the "scar" or else it would have been backwards if I did it myself.

To the Bat Cave!

Day: Two Hundred and Thirty One

Photo taken on Sunday, March 20, 2011 in the Manga Loft at 1159pm.

This is a sad moment. It's not earth-shattering, just a little sad.

Today, I am starting to say goodbye to the Manga Loft.

Where I am standing-this hidden room from the stairs behind our couch-was the main selling point for me to move into this apartment almost one year ago. I have always been a fan of stairs that lead to nowhere, to a room that has only one exit-unless you count jumping over the railing into the living room below which I have seen done on more than one occasion with the lofts in the skiing condos we rented through the years but that's not the point. The point is, I love this room, it is my room, my sanctuary. Whether I am doing SPARCS, drinking a brew with friends on the rainbow beanbag chairs, or engaging in a battle with the many action figures I have up here, it has been a place for me to be me.

But now we're moving and I no longer have a Manga Loft. I'll now have a Manga Dining Room which everyone can see when they walk through the door. Anyone can just peruse my giant wrap-around desk and see my current (awful) storyboards. I feel like I'm losing my privacy [sanity] and I blame it entirely on the management here that think it is totally fair to raise our already astronomical rent by 15%. Those bastards are basically pushing us out even though they called us "excellent tenants" they wasted no time in showing us the door. If I believed in hell I'd tell them they could rot there but instead I can only wish my stomach pains on them because that has to be the equivalent, right?

So today I begin to load up the DVDs into the DVD box we used the last time we moved (11 months ago) and tearfully push it down the stairs (way too heavy to even consider lifting it). Steve comes up to pack away the majority of the manga because I just don't have it in me to do it so I work on the shelves containing other books. I'm not sure if either of us are ready to move the Naruto display rack downstairs at the moment, way to "final".

All I can hope is that in a year from now I'll get that Manga Loft back or maybe even better than a Manga Loft, a Manga Lair! And this time, I won't be renting the space, I'll own it!

Suck it apartment complex I live in currently! Suck it long and suck it hard!

Snape, Snape, Severus Snape.

Day: One Hundred and Eighteen

Photo taken on Saturday, November 27, 2010 in the Farmingdale Multiplex at 344pm.

Maeve and I are HUGE Potter geeks totally knee deep into Pottermania and we don't care what you think about that. Even though the seventh movie came out last week, we waited for the chance to watch it together for the first time. It is soooooo good! We eagerly await the next and final part and hope all you other Pgeeks come along for the ride. (Don't try to hide, we know who you are.)

PS- Maeve bought me that scarf!!

The Sorting Hat

Day: Fifty Three

Photo taken on Thursday, September 23, 2010 at 714am inside the infamous medical records room.

I'm sure most businesses make you carry photo IDs. We're required by the AAAHC to wear them at all times so patients can identify who works at the surgery center and who just walked off the street. So when important people like the Department of Health make an unexpected visit to the Surge we all look professional. Problem is, I'm the only one who wears it all the time. My coworkers make fun of me for doing it calling it my "bus pass" because it dangles from my neck and is visible to everyone who looks at me. I try to change up my strap as much as possible and it totally clashes with my poor excuse of an outfit but I like wearing it regardless.

This one I picked up in the Harry Potter store and everyone thinks I'm donning a tie today on its debut. When I walk into bossdad's office he says it looks like a St. Anthony's tie. I tell him that's the point because it represents the different houses in Hogwarts. He cocks an eyebrow. I explain: "There are four houses in the school: Gryffindor, Slytherin, Hufflepuff, and Ravenclaw. Gryffindor is Harry's house and they're known for having courage. Syltherin folks are power hungry-"

He cuts me off. "Which one is the pansy house?"

I drop my head and pick up my bus pass. "Hufflepuff," I say dejectedly.

"Thought so," he answers and goes back to work.

Hogwarts a History

Day: Forty Six

Photo taken on Thursday, September 16, 2010 in Islands of Adventure, Orlando, FL in The Wizarding World of Harry Potter. We’re currently on line for Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey.

I really wish my Potter buddy, Maeve, could have been here for this experience because you literally step into the magical world that is Harry Potter. All the stores from Hogsmeade are present and I enjoy that all the architecture in the town is capped with snow to give the desired effect of all the Christmas-y trips the students take each year. There's even a Butterbeer stand by the Hogwarts Express which I definitely indulged in (we think its cream soda with cream on top but delicious regardless of what it really is). Steve shows immense patience with my giddiness as he provides his own interpretation of John Williams' score as we enter Hogwarts to tour the inside corridors. Christine is also very patient with me throughout the long experience since I want to see and do everything the town has to offer. The HP merchandise alone had me running in circles because I wanted it all!

If you're a crazed Potter fan like me, I highly recommend the trip down to Universal. It's worth it.
